Housewives do great cardio training
A friend of mine suggested me to write an article, to help housewives lose weight. After all I think housework is high enough activity to be treated as cardio training and helps burn fats.
I won’t mention her name, because she doesn’t want to do that, but I think her idea is very good. With so many housewives around the world it will be very helpful to write something for them as well. They deserve it:)
Because more housewives do not like gym trainings and more women with babies do not have time to go to the gym, they can do very productive weight loss training by doing their housework. Actually what is better than doing your work and burning fats at the same time.
Ok, let start with some numbers, you are interested in.
The table below shows calories burnt during some household activities:
| Activity | Calories burnt in 1 hour* |
|---|---|
| Moderate walking | 287 |
| Hovering | 193 |
| Dusting | 174 |
| Painting, house projects | 66 |
| Gardening, Weeding | 288 |
| Mopping floors | 194 |
| Car washing | 234 |
| Cleaning windows | 180 |
| Ironing | 113 |
| Wallpapering | 133 |
| Chopping wood | 415 |
| Moderate walking up and down stairs | 516 |
Table source
* Values are based on a 37yr old female, 5ft 5, weighing 12 stone. Those who weigh more than this will burn more calories; those who weigh less will burn fewer calories.
As you can see some of these activities burn lot of calories, but consider that gym weight training or veloergometer cycling (”Why veloergometer is best for weight loss?“) will burn much more.
Because household activities burn fewer calories you have to make some changes in your nutrition habits. Proper diet will ensure one of the weight loss aspects checked. The other one, which I am going to help you to check as well, is training.
Tips to make your house cardio training more effective:
1) Build a plan of your housework.
For example you can separate your “more calories” burning house activities in a period of 1 and a half hour during the day. This will ensure maximum energy spent and better results at the end.
Planning your housework will help you to organize your day, finish your daily tasks and do your weight loss training. At the end of the day everyone will be happier and your body will look better.
2) You can deliberately forget something.
If you have to move some stuff, try to move these objects one by one. This will let you go back for another one and another one, which in the end will cause more calories burnt. It is some kind of “Circle training for weight loss and busy people“.
3) Create some difficulties in your work.
- If you have to clean the windows, choose smaller window cloth.
- Choose smaller mop, when you have to clean the floor.
- Collect more clothes and then start ironing them all. This will help you done it at once and also will burn more calories.
4) If you have baby, play a lot with him/her.
This is great time for both of you and very productive for your figure. May be this is the highest energy spend activity of all. But it is very pleasant. You won’t notice when 1 or 2 hours are passed.
But be careful. You have to have work for the next day. If you done with all of your house tasks, then what are going to do next day:)
And be careful with one more thing. When your husband got home he has to find his stuff.
I think this is good starting point - “100 weight loss spots to check every day“.
Quick info: A survey shows that the average housewife spends four hours and 55 minutes each day looking after the children.

If anyone needs a workout, I have a kitchen floor that needs waxing! ;)
It takes me an hour to scrub the hard water residue from my tub/shower. It was a full body workout! Probably wouldn’t take me so long if I did it more often!
Thank you Ruth. DaleK I think I can help with this, because my the gym I was going to is closed now. Anyway I am too far so you have to do it by yourself:)
